Well ended up with a slow afternoon around the shop and was minus one kid after school due to a after school play day with a buddy, so my daughter and I headed out to a lake North of town and decided to do a little ice fishing. The weather was in the 20's overcast, and a slight breeze. Nothing too bad compared to the frigid temps we've been stuck in for the last couple of weeks.
We packed up some popcorn, hot chocolate, a couple of beers for the old man, as well as some various snacks and treats. I hadn't been out this season to fish but figured the ice had to be thick...well yes, it was, 14" thick...I drilled 3 holes and we baited up with wax worms. Within 5 minutes she wanted to play around on the ice which was completely fine in my book. We left the poles (yes these were poles) in the ice and took a walk around the lake checking out points near and far.
We headed back to our camp of sorts. Not another person on the lake and didn't look like anyone had been out. No ant hills from previous anglers no crunched snow, just a white blanket as far as the you could see.
We poured some hot chocolate, talked about the slowness of the fish and decided to tap another hole...and then one of the poles started moving towards the hole. I grabbed it and we decided to stick it out with the holes we had. I fished in one, she fished in the other. Within 15 minutes she pulled out 5 or 6 fish...nothing huge, but was fun to have something tug on the line. She beat the old man who only managed to hook 2. We had a double header at one point which she found pretty funny.
Good luck to anyone getting to get out.
